Enter room areas, pick a layout waste preset from Cavalieri Flooring ranges, and set box size. The page rounds boxes up, prints leftover square feet against your actual area, and lists every layout preset in one table. The ten percent figure is trade consensus with a visible note. Waste series

Waiting for room dimensions.

Waste ranges follow Cavalieri Flooring. When a preset is a range, the box count uses the top of that range: ordering short risks a second dye lot, ordering long costs one box. Box counts round up, never down, and leftover is computed against your actual area.

Leftover is part of the answer

Flooring ships in whole boxes. The leftover row tells you how much material remains beyond your measured area after rounding up, so you can see what a layout choice costs in boxes.

Presets instead of a blank percent field

Cavalieri Flooring publishes layout-specific waste ranges. The series table repeats every preset so you can compare diagonal, herringbone, and chevron layouts without retyping rooms.

The leftover row is your attic stock

The tool's own note tells you that ordering short risks a second dye lot. The leftover row is the other half of that: it is the material you will still have in two years when a plank is damaged, and it is the only material guaranteed to match the floor you laid. If the leftover figure comes out under a square yard, order one more box on purpose. That is a decision about repairs, not a rounding error, and neither the preset nor the box count will make it for you.

Questions

Is ten percent an NWFA standard?

No. The 2025 NWFA Wood Flooring Installation Guidelines contain no waste or overage percentage. The ten percent residential figure is trade consensus published by Cavalieri Flooring.

How do multiple areas work?

Add up to ten rectangular sections for L shaped rooms. Total square footage feeds one box count and one leftover figure.

What is the waste preset actually covering?

Mostly cut loss: material lost to the geometry of the room and the pattern, which is why a diagonal or a herringbone layout costs more than a straight lay. Our waste-factor article puts it more broadly, as cuts, trims and mistakes, and moves you within the published range on how tricky the job is. Both are true, and the range is wide enough to hold both readings. What matters here is that this tool already orders at the top of the range, so a first-time installer is covered twice if they also add a box.

Where does square feet per box come from?

The carton, not the product page. Coverage varies inside a single product line by plank width and thickness, and a spec sheet often quotes the most common carton. Read the number off the box you are actually buying.
