Wheel of Names alternatives for the classroom
Wheel of Names is free, needs no signup, and can store wheels locally. Most classroom alternatives add themes and sounds. For a projected class, two other things matter more: how much the page loads from other companies, and whether it can call the same student twice before everyone has had a turn.
Here's how to check both, and when the wheel is still the better choice.
Start with what Wheel of Names already does well
Wheel of Names does not put the core spinner behind a paywall or an account. It states that premium features are free, and it offers cloud or local storage for saved wheels. Weighted entries, multi-wheel management, and a large licensed audio library are real strengths. A comparison page that pretends those are missing is not useful to a teacher.
Habit is real too. If your class knows the wheel and enjoys it, that familiarity is worth something, and nothing here asks you to give it up.
What a classroom projection actually loads
On a single homepage load on August 3, 2026 we counted 65 third-party hosts,
19 third-party scripts and 98 localStorage keys. The stack is
programmatic advertising plus cross-site identity resolution, which is a
different thing from display advertising: those scripts exist to join a
browser to a person across sites. Open a network panel and count them
yourself; figures move over time.
We ran the same count on our random name picker without repeats on October 9, 2026: 0 third-party hosts, 0 localStorage keys before Save was pressed, and every request went to benchvale.com. A list of five names, Ava, Ben, Cara, Dev, and Eli, took exactly five picks to clear with no repeats, and the sixth pick started a new round. The picker runs in the tab. Your list is saved in this browser only if you press Save. A share link carries the list after the #, a part of the link this page does not send to our server. The names are part of the link itself. Select Classroom mode to hide site chrome and enlarge the board for the projector. Classroom mode takes ad slots out of the page rather than hiding them, so the projected board shows no ads. The difference is what the projected page contacts, plus no-repeat picking and Classroom mode. It is not that Wheel of Names uploads your class list: it can store wheels locally when you choose that option.
Other classroom pickers, stated fairly
Other classroom pickers tend to win on themes, timers, and links to school accounts. Many are plain randomizers, so the same student can be called twice before everyone has had a turn, and that happens more than you'd guess. With 25 names, a plain random pick repeats someone within 5 picks about 35 percent of the time, and within 10 picks about 88 percent of the time. How to check any picker in about thirty seconds
Open the network panel, clear it, reload, and count third-party hosts after the page settles. Paste a short class list, pick five times, and see whether a name can repeat before the list is exhausted. That is the whole comparison method. Marketing copy is optional once those two observations are in front of you.
